Empire of the Sun - Walking On A Dream
Sometimes I feel like I should just directly reblog Cam Lindsay’s Click Hear column on Exclaim.ca on a daily basis. So much quality!
Today he’s posted another doozy. Lindsay calls Walking On A Dream “a delicious homage to new wave - from the video’s Adam Ant get-ups and Duran Duran flash to the gorgeous synergy running through the simple combination of a drum machine, lush synths and unfussy guitar strums.” Be sure to take a peek at the review page for the aforementioned video and a truly awesome Dune-esque band poster.

Ed Banger’s SebastiAn just keeps churning out top-shelf tracks. And every single one of them sounds like some sort of awesomely foreboding soundtrack to the non-existent retrofuturist remake of Vanishing Point.

I’m so excited about wierdness becoming common in pop (read: pop, as in genre AND pop, as in “popular”) music again. It’s like all the good parts of silly and bizarre 80s pop have come rushing back to punch us all in the face. But in a fun way. And I think it will continue, as most current pop (as in “popular”) music is dull and unimaginative enough to bore even the drones at this point.
Or perhaps I’m falling into the same assumption-trap in which I often find myself — the one that causes me to assume that your typical consumer-of-media is more autonomous and discerning than I fear they actually are. Ah well, cautious and self-delusional optimism isn’t the worst habit I can think of.
Chairlift are casually weird and they’re from Brooklyn just like everyone else and MGMT remixed this song for their debut 7” and you should give them a listen. Yep.

MGMT - Weekend Wars
Dang, what an opening. It’s like Bowie forgot he stopped eating acid for breakfast and put on the glittery eyeshadow again. And then became two guys called Vanwyngarden and Goldwasser. This is exactly the kind of derivative psych-glam cheese I want to hear right now.
Bonus: No vowels in the band’s name. Trnd(y)!
